  Toward Pixel-wise Vision in Epiretinal Visual Prosthesis

  Abstract:
  Visual prosthesis aims to restore vision to those affected by sight-robbing illnesses. Although government-approved vision devices provide advantageous sight enhancements, visual and spatial perception of electrically activated cells requires significant improvement for delivering functional vision. High-level theoretical studies of electrode arrangements and of realistic neural responses in the retina are modeled for enhancing visual perception. Computational efficiency in neural modeling and deep theoretical thinking for a possible physical realization of electronics are considered. The theoretical viability of increasing electrode sites, safe avenues of stimulation that guarantee electrochemical safety and pixel-wise stimulation are met. The understanding of the physical aspects of phosphenes is addressed. Neural modeling is verified by means of experimental studies from literature.

  Biomimetic Stimulating Array for Single Localized Stimulation in Visual Prosthesis

  Abstract:
  Visual prostheses electrically stimulate nearby neurons to generate artificial vision in patients blinded by retinal degenerative diseases. Current prosthetic devices offer limited spatial resolution that results in unselective stimulation of ganglion cells and the generation of percepts with shapes other than a small spot of light. In this study, we introduce a theoretical ap-proach to treat the biomimetic retinal electrode array. This array produces electrodes that are self-determined to adjust their spatial parameters for single localized stimulation. Electrode stimulation of the biomimetic electrode array was simulated in a 3D reconstruction of the retina and ganglionic layer at locations in the retina with high area cell density. We also simulated ganglion cell stimulation in the far periphery as the array could be relocated on the retina due to the natural movements of the eye. Single localized stimulation was achieved throughout the retinal regions near the fovea, which is required in humans for activities where visual detail is of primary importance and thus relevant for high resolution vision. Single-cell stimula-tion responses leveled off until 30° of eccentricity in average using the biomimetic array with large array area. That is, the biomimetic array can produce a stable stimulation of single cells and a broad field of view for a wide region of the retina.Lastly, we provide considerations for the biomimetic electrode array for practical applications. Together of being useful to improve single cell activation, the applicability of the biomimetic electrode array can yield strategies to increase the area of the array and produce a wide-ranging field of view.

  A Treatise of the Physical Aspects of Phosphenes and Single-Cell Selectivity in Retinal Stimulation

  Abstract:
  Objective: Artificial vision is currently in an early-stage of maturity. This can be understood as a falling short of visualprosthesis to generate a complete visual scene with detail perception. Similarly, the physical aspects of phosphenes or spotsof light demand a better understanding.Approach: This study introduces the strategy of the activation area and pinpoints its usefulness to estimate the amountof cells activated and identify the size and shape of the phosphenes. A simulation framework was built by integrating therelevant retinal interface elements and the dynamics of the ionic channels in the ganglion cells. Shape perceptions reportedby Keserü in clinical trials were directly compared with our simulation framework. Similarly, the strategy of the activationarea is used on a proposed electrode array to activate single cells and to produce a small spot of light required for highresolutionvision.Main Results: The wide range of shape responses formerly described by patients is highly correlated with our simulationbasedfindings. Single-cell selectivity was reached throughout the regions near the fovea, which is necessary in humans foractivities where visual detail is of primary importance and thus relevant for high resolution vision. For realistic applications,we provided the dimensions of the electrode carrier for single localized stimulation.Significance: Together of being useful to identify the physical aspects of phosphenes generated by electrical stimulation,the applicability of the activation area can yield valuable strategies to attain single-cell selectivity

  Development of an impedance spectroscopy device for on-line cell growth monitoring

  Abstract:
  The impedance and dielectric properties of biological samples are often used to estimate the number of cells growing in a culture, and monitor the cell growth in real time. For these type of studies, high-cost and complex commercial equipment is often required. This work presents the design and implementation of a standalone device for impedance spectroscopy of cell samples, featuring low cost, portability, and easy reconfigurability of frequency and voltage. The device can generate sinusoidal, square and triangular signals with frequencies up to 125 kHz, at voltages in the range from 0 V to 100 mV. Cell growth experiments were carried out with yeast cultures, and the results are compared with a commercial Agilent 4284A LCR meter. The error percentages for magnitude and phase measurements are less than 5%.

  An enhanced lumped element electrical model of a double barrier memristive device

  Abstract:
  The massive parallel approach of neuromorphic circuits leads to effective methods for solving complex problems. It has turned out that resistive switching devices with a continuous resistance range are potential candidates for such applications. These devices are memristive systems—nonlinear resistors with memory. They are fabricated in nanotechnology and hence parameter spread during fabrication may aggravate reproducible analyses. This issue makes simulation models of memristive devices worthwhile. Kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations based on a distributed model of the device can be used to understand the underlying physical and chemical phenomena. However, such simulations are very time-consuming and neither convenient for investigations of whole circuits nor for real-time applications, e.g. emulation purposes. Instead, a concentrated model of the device can be used for both fast simulations and real-time applications, respectively. We introduce an enhanced electrical model of a valence change mechanism (VCM) based double barrier memristive device (DBMD) with a continuous resistance range. This device consists of an ultra-thin memristive layer sandwiched between a tunnel barrier and a Schottky-contact. The introduced model leads to very fast simulations by using usual circuit simulation tools while maintaining physically meaningful parameters. Kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations based on a distributed model and experimental data have been utilized as references to verify the concentrated model.

  In this work simulation and experimental results of the frequency response of ionic solutions are presented. The used technique known as Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) can be used for electrical characterization of chemical solutions regarding their ionic concentration. This technique may be used in several fields, e.g. for measurement of biological cells and tissues and for food quality control.

  Abstract:
  This study presents the trade-offs when using a Switched capacitor (SC) DC-DC converter as the energy management device on a highly integrated implantable medical device. The efficiency of the Low Dropout Regulator (LDO) is presented and used as a reference point to determine the performance gain when using an SC converter. Also, the balance between load requirements and optimum parameters for implementing an SC converter is analyzed. The analysis presented can be used to determine when an SC converter is the best solution for energy management on an implantable device.
